  Saturday morning, less than a week after Hurricane Gladys hit Savannah…

  “Funny, I was thinkin’ it’s better there, at your house. Between Nevvie and Karen, Susan don’t stand a chance. Add in Tommy, Ty, and Bill, and they’ll run her off if she comes back, no problem.” Colin glanced around. “Maybe I should get an alarm system for here. Never felt I needed one before. Even though I changed the locks so Susan can’t get in, it’d be nice to know if she tries. I know a couple of people around here have them.”

  “We can talk to Tom about that.” Andrew kissed him again. He couldn’t get enough of kissing him. He started to say something when, outside, they heard several sirens race past the house.

  “What the hell?” Colin
walked over to the living room window to peek out. Just as he did, yet another sheriff’s cruiser, with lights and sirens blaring, sped past. “Somethin’ big goin’ on. They’re heading down toward Cairdon Road.”

  “Which road?”

  “The one we walked down yesterday evenin’. Nothin’ down there, except a few houses and private woods on the back side of the state forest. A few hunting camps in there.” He glanced at the time. “Hell, it’s only 6:00.” He turned back to Andrew. “Why are we up so damned early, anyway?” He walked over to Andrew to kiss him again. “There’s other things we could be doin’ in bed, you know.”

  “Sorry, love. Force of habit.” He draped his arms over Colin’s shoulders. “We could take our coffee back to the bedroom.”

  Looking up the road, in the direction the vehicles had traveled, Andrew couldn’t see any emergency vehicles although he heard a siren in the distance.

  “What’s goin’ on?” the neighbor called over.

  Colin shrugged. “Beats me.”

  They were about to return to Colin’s house when another sheriff’s vehicle passed, running lights but no siren. A van.
