  Juju rested his chin on her left shoulder. “You do what you need to do to get by, sweetheart. It’s all right.”

  “I’m still just so…angry. At Silo, but a little at Stu. That maybe if he’d tried harder or done something different, he wouldn’t have fallen into the trap. Which is stupid. He couldn’t help that he got hurt, and he didn’t mean or want to be an addict. He thought the drug was going to help him get better. Or at least be able to function. He wanted to be a better brother and son. And that just makes me even more angry.”

  “Then channel that whenever you have doubts or miss your parents,” Delta said. “Use that to get you through.”

  She turned and leaned against the railing, facing them. “What’s next, long-term?” she asked. “Assuming Ki
te is vanquished and we kill or otherwise get rid of Silo.”

  “That’s up to you,” Delta said. “Once we are no longer beholden to the US of A military, we belong only to you.”

  Juju nodded.

  “Yeah. That might be hard to explain to them, but I’m not giving you two up.”

  “I could handle living in post-Silo Houston,” Juju said, looking at Delta.

  Delta nodded. “Wherever she wants is fine with me.”

  She pulled them in for a hug. “I guess we have a while to decide that yet,” she said, comforted by their solid presence. “I just need to monkey up and focus on the job at hand.”

  “What?” she asked.

  “Just because we like you, doesn’t mean if we find you on the wrong side that we won’t kill you.”

  “If you find me on the wrong side, I’ll already be dead from my own hand,” he said.

  Omega nodded. “Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.”

  Ax got into the car and left, heading west for a while. Before dawn on Thanksgiving morning, the air felt crisp and cold, sharp, slicing through any gap in clothing. Not quite ice weather, but near enough. The cloudless sky overhead meant the temps had dropped overnight, but there wasn’t enough humidity in the air and no precipitation to slick the salted roads over.

  He drove carefully, alert.

  Only once he was nearly twenty miles from the safe house did he turn to the north and start his wide circle around. He would be coming at the city from the northeast when he finally drew close.

  At eleven o’clock, he pulled into the parking lot and shut off his engine. The restaurant was doing a brisk business today, which sort of surprised him. He’d spent a lot of holidays working and hadn’t realized so many people went out to eat on Thanksgiving.

  As ordered, he sat on a bench just inside the doorway and waited.

  Nearly an hour later, a figure entered the lobby and approached him. Swathed in a long winter coat, her face and hair mostly concealed by a blue scarf and matching knit cap, she stopped in front of him.

  He stared up at her before standing.

  When she unwound her scarf and gave him a smile, he let out a sigh of relief and gladly hugged her.

  She turned to the hostess. “Two, please. Me and my son.”

  The hostess looked around and then grabbed two menus after marking off her sheet. “Right this way.”
