  He should have known better than to try to keep it from her.

  He motioned for her to keep her voice down. “One of the things Marcus left for Ty was an envelope full of stuff. Including letters between him and Jean-Claude. In French.”

  She frowned. “What?”

  “I took one of the older ones, typed it into a doc, and used Google to translate it. It’s…personal stuff. Some of them are dated around the time Marcus and Ty met. I don’t want Ty knowing what’s in them until I know what’s in them first. I want Dad’s help translating them so we aren’t letting Ty march into an emotional minefield. That’s why I asked you to ask Dad if he could speak French.”

  She grokked him now. “Ohh.” She hugged him. “Go. I’ll keep him distracted.”

  Dad waved to him from the kitchen window as Tom got out of the car. The house smelled of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, and Tom had never in his life been so glad to be home as he was right now.

  “Welcome home!” Andrew hugged him after opening the front door for him. “Where’s Ty?”

  “He’s still home asleep. Where’s Bill and Karen?”

  “They headed into town with the princess to do some last-minute hurricane shopping. What’s all this, then?” He pointed at the laptop case.

  “We alone?”

  “Why, yes. Colin will be back later, though. He ran home to pick up a few things.”

  “Oh. I’m looking forward to meeting him. But, eh, I did need to talk to you alone. Can we go into the kitchen? Are there any cinnamon rolls left?”

  Andrew led the way with a smile. “We made extra. I’d hoped you boys would stop by this morning. So exciting! I haven’t been to Brussels in over twenty years. How was your trip?” He turned, wincing. “Although, I am sorry about Tyler’s friend.”

  “That’s what I need your help with, Dad. I have a massive favor to ask. If you want to tell me no, I’ll understand and it won’t hurt my feelings.” Tom settled at the table and removed the envelope from the laptop case while Andrew brought him a plate with two cinnamon rolls on it.

  “Anything.” He sat across from Tom. “Name it.”

  “It’s…” Tom took a deep breath. “It’s personal, and I hate to ask this, but I need to keep it private between you and me, for now. Nev knows I’m here. Ty doesn’t. Why will become obvious shortly.”

  He scowled. “Secrets?”

  “Yeah.”

  “I don’t honestly know how to answer that. I don’t like to be dishonest.”

  “I know, Dad, but…please?”

  “Very well, I’ll hear you out, but I reserve the right to change my mind.”

  After several minutes, Andrew looked up. “These are…quite personal. And I believe there may be a few mentions of Tyler in them, although perhaps not by name, more by reference. This won’t be a quick thing, though. I really should sort them by date and start with the oldest ones.”

  “That’s fine. Just hide them for me until you’re done. This is between you and me. I don’t want anyone else knowing besides Nevvie.”

  “Is there…anything else you’re not disclosing to me? I see mention in some of these…” He scrubbed his face with his hands. “Bloody hell,” he muttered. Then he met Tom’s gaze head-on. “This Jean-Claude chap refers to Marcus as ‘Master’ several times.”

  Tom nodded. “Yeah. That’s accurate. They had a non-traditional relationship dynamic. Think Fifty Shades, except full-time, and the real deal, not bullshit.”

  “Yeah. Apparently he regretted leaving Ty the way he did.   “Do you mind if I write on these? Just to number them for reference to the translations. I’ll type the translations into a document file for you. It’ll take me a couple of days, at least. Perhaps longer. Especially with everyone around because of the storm.”

  “Sure. Take all the time you need. If he looks for them, I’ll stall him. He can’t read French anyway.”

  “Right.” He gathered them up.
“Let me go put these someplace safe then.” He left the kitchen for a moment.

  Without Andrew there, Tom could almost imagine the footsteps he heard leading down the hall and toward the bedrooms was Momma, that she was still alive.

His three children basically disowned him when he came out after his wife died.”

  “Your children have already been amazing to him, and Bill and Karen have practically adopted him. John and Kelly have also been simply wonderful. I’ve assured him he’s welcome in this family.”

  “Hell, yeah, he is.” Tom smiled. “At least we won’t need a shotgun wedding for you two.”
