  “No one’s perfect. And it’s more important you were able to make this one thing right that you could for them.”

  “I guess.”

  “So what’s wrong?”

  Cali shook her head. “I know it’s not my problem, but I don’t understand why some people are like…her.”

  “Like you said, not your problem. Some people are hardwired to be shitty the way we’re hardwired to be kinky. Some people, it’s learned behavior. Once they hit shitty adulthood, it’s nearly impossible to turn them into non-shitty adults.”

  Loren’s expression darkened. “One less shitty person in the world isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Not like she was a Nobel scientist or something where we could say, ‘Oh, she’s a shitty person, but at least she cured cancer.’ She took and took, and as far as I’ve learned, she never gave.”

  Loren leaned back in her chair. “Not saying dead is best, but I’m not going to lose sleep over her. I wouldn’t either, if I were you.”

  “I’m not.” Cali watched Max smile as he talked with Ross. He’d also seemed…lighter the past couple of days. “I just want them to be happy. That’s what matters to me. That’s all that matters to me.”

  “And that,” Loren said with a smile, “is why you’re not a shitty person.”

  Chapter Twelve

  All their guests had departed after helping with clean-up, and Sean still softly snored where he lay on the couch.

  Cali stood there, arms crossed. “Should we wake him up?”

  “I loosened his ropes enough he can get out of them,” Max said. “He’s comfy. I say we leave him there. Let him sleep.”

  She tipped her head to the side. “Aw. He’s so cute like that.”

  “I know, right?” Max draped an arm around her shoulders. “He’s frickin’ adorable.” He tipped his head onto her shoulder. “One of the main reasons why I fell in love with him so hard.”

  “I thought that was due to the forced bi stuff and the fact that Lydia was a mega-bitch.”

  “Those were contributing circumstances.” He smiled. “He kind of wore me down, though.”

  “And he gives great blowjobs.”

  Sean headed for their bathroom to doctor his wounds, Cali following. She dropped the rope in their office on her way past and shut the door.

  Cali laughed.

  The end of the bed dipped. “Maow.”

  Cali sat up and turned on the light. Sean was sitting up and cradling his balls while Baxter looked on from the end of the bed.

  “What happened?”

  She started laughing.

  Before long, both Sean and Max were laughing with her.

  Sean’s arm slipped around her. “Going to sleep with them buried inside you to keep them safe, at this rate.”

  “Go to sleep, both of you,” Max said, finally under control again. “It’s almost four in the morning.”
